Rocky K. Copley, Esq.Rocky K. Copley received his Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1978 from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. He attended law school at University of Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California. He received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1981.


Mr. Copley has practiced law for 37 years. He has substantial experience in the area of civil litigation and has tried numerous trials before both juries and the bench. He is an Associate Member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and is a Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Attorneys (NBOTA).  His practice emphasizes personal injury, insurance coverage and insurance bad faith, wrongful termination, sexual harassment and discrimination, and business litigation. In 1986, he opened and managed the San Diego regional office for the statewide law firm known as Borton, Petrini & Conron, LLP. He rose to the level of senior partner in that firm. He left the firm in late 2005 to open his own law practice. He is currently the principal owner of the Law Office of Rocky K. Copley located in downtown San Diego.


Mr. Copley has been a member of the California State Bar Association since 1981. He is an Associate Member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and a Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBOTA). He is also a member of the San Diego County Bar Association, the Consumer Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the Consumer Lawyers Association of San Diego, and the American Association for Justice. He is admitted to practice law before all California state and federal courts. In addition, he is admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Copley has received an AV® peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell International Law Directory. An AV peer review rating means that a lawyer has achieved the height of professional excellence. In order to receive such a high rating, the lawyer usually is required to practice law for many years. The rating recognizes the highest levels of skill and integrity. The rating is the result of a peer review system based upon confidential opinions of practicing attorneys and members of the judiciary which are provided to the Martindale-Hubbell International Law Directory.

Mr. Copley was the secretary and president for the Northern Santa Barbara County Bar Association in 1983 and 1984, respectively. In 1986, he moved to San Diego and opened the San Diego regional office for Borton, Petrini & Conron, LLP.

Mr. Copley is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum which means that he has successfully recovered in excess of $1 million for his clients.

Mr. Copley has several published judicial decisions. One decision established the law involving the negligent entrustment of an automobile which was rented to a foreign renter by a rental company. Another decision established the law that a plaintiff is not entitled to obtain information regarding reinsurance for the liability carrier for a defendant in a personal injury case.

Mr. Copley is frequently called upon to serve as a lecturer on issues of personal injury, employment and labor law, insurance coverage and bad faith, Fair Claims Settlement Practice Regulations, and many other legal topics.


Mr. Copley was an All-American basketball player in high school and received an athletic scholarship.

He played college basketball at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. He transferred and completed his eligibility at the College of William and Mary. He continues to play basketball in local leagues and volunteers his time as an assistant coach for the girls’ freshman basketball team at La Jolla High School.

Mr. Copley has been married for 39 years to his wife, Patty, and they have raised three children.
